Psalms 89, 118

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in humans.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in princes.
~Psalm 118: 8-9

Yeah, but a lot of times it is so much EASIER to trust humans. It's easy to think that a change in government can make things better or if that one chick who gets on my nerves would just move to Alaska or something I would be so much less agitated. Part of putting on the armor of God, as outlined in Ephesians 6, is taking up the shield of faith which puts out the darts of the devil. God has been teaching me lately that what it means to take up my shield is to hold that truth out in front of me: it is better to take refuge in the LORD than to look for anything else to solve my problems. Any thought that comes my way to the contrary of truth is a lie. When I have my shield up I recognize that lie and see the truth at the same time and choose faith. I choose to believe what God says even if it doesn't make sense to me.

Something I often tell my kids is that they don't always NEED to understand why I'm telling them to do, or not do, something. Sometimes there isn't a great explanation and sometimes I just want to see if they will trust me. What's important is that I understand, and they can trust me to make good decisions for them when they can't make good decisions for themselves. The reason I want them to learn this now is because I face the same challenge all the time. I don't understand God or what he's asking or what he's brought into my life. But I want to, like Mary, respond, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." (Luke 1:38)
