Ezekiel 10-11

There at the entrance of the gate were twenty-five men, and I saw among them Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people.  The Lord said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who are plotting evil and giving wicked advice in this city... Therefore prophesy against them; prophesy, son of man.” ...he told me to say: “This is what the Lord says: That is what you are saying, you leaders in Israel, but I know what is going through your mind. You have killed many people in this city and filled its streets with the dead... You fear the sword, and the sword is what I will bring against you, declares the Sovereign Lord. ~ Selections from Ezekiel 11

Dang. God doesn't mess around when he executes judgement. He's basically saying, "you know the thing you fear the most? Yeah, that's what I'm going to use to bring you down." A couple verses came to mind as possible reasons why these men were in this predicament:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. ~Proverbs 9:10

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. ~Matthew 10:28

These guys with crazy names (Ian would probably nickname them Jaazy and Pelpel) were missing something HUGE. Their focus was not on God. They were concerned with their physical safety most of all and not at all concerned with what God thought of their actions. Maybe if they would have taken Solomon's advice they wouldn't have found themselves skewered by the sword.
