Psalm 137, Lamentations 1

Yeah, that's how cute my kid is:)
A few verses that stuck out to me from Lamentations 1:
Jerusalem sinned grievously;
    therefore she became filthy...
 Her uncleanness was in her skirts;
    she took no thought of her future;
therefore her fall is terrible...

 “My transgressions were bound into a yoke;
    by his hand they were fastened together;
they were set upon my neck;
    he caused my strength to fail;
the Lord gave me into the hands
    of those whom I cannot withstand.

 “The Lord is in the right,
    for I have rebelled against his word;
but hear, all you peoples,
    and see my suffering;
my young women and my young men
    have gone into captivity.
 “I called to my lovers,
    but they deceived me;

The people of God turned from him. The followed their own hearts and desires (or "lovers"). They were only concerned about themselves and gave no thought to how the way they lived would impact the things that happened to them in the future. They carried the weight and guilt of that sin. This writer feels the burden of sin like a yoke on his shoulders and he knows that the Lord is in the right for bringing judgement. Finally, he calls to the things that were supposed to make him whole, supposed to fulfill him, his lovers, but he gets no response. He is abandoned.

This is still the outlook for anyone who is not in Christ. As the writer of Ecclesiastes tells us, "there is nothing new under the sun." People without Chirst are without hope for this life AND the one to come and sadly most of them don't even see their depravity before God. In most of the western world we are surrounded by distractions that we think make us happy but on the day of judgement there are people who will call to those lovers made of metal, wood, fabric, whatever TV's are made out of, plastic, etc. but those things can't answer!

The author of Lamentations calls to you to see his sufferings and learn from it. Don't settle for less than what God has made you for: Himself!

“Hold everything in your hands lightly, otherwise it hurts when God pries your fingers open.” ― Corrie ten Boom
