There is so much sorrow expressed in these laments that it is hard to read. The people of Israel are so desperate that they turn to cannibalism! (2:20) God has stopped listening and has decided that exile and utter destruction are what Israel needs to wake up. They were putting their faith in their riches and idols, so He took it all away.
And yet, in the midst of all the pain, sorrow, death, and destruction we get this hopeful declaration:
"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
The LORD is my portion, says my soul,
therefore I will hope in him."
Even though God took away everything and Jeremiah experienced persecution, he still had hope. His hope was not found in wealth, reputation, or accolades. His hope was found in who God had proven himself to be. Jeremiah had such dark moments but he always came back to God's love and faithfulness.
When everything seems to be falling apart, do I still trust God? I can admit that I haven't. I've doubted His goodness and love. But I cannot forget that He has proven Himself time and time again. Ultimately, He showed His great love by sending Jesus and making a way for all of us to have a relationship with Him. He calls us His children, and makes a promise to forgive us and never leave us.
In the midst of suffering, we have a choice. We can choose to rely on ourselves and end up like the Israelites, empty and longing for more OR we can rely on God and find hope and life.
