As I read through these two chapters I was reminded of another verse in Romans that describes a similar situation. It's not difficult to be reminded of other scripture by reading this particular part of Jeremiah because God is basically saying, "Hey listen up! I made you, but you have rebelled against me and now there needs to be payment for that sin," and that is the story of scripture. It's retold over and over again. I love how God says this in Jeremiah 18:13;15
Ask among the nations,
Who has heard the like of this?
But my people have forgotten me;
they make offerings to false gods...
Who has heard anything like this??? It is absurd to God that anyone would know the
living God yet chase after pieces of wood and stone. But this is what we
always do:
For
although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave
thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts
were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. ~Romans 1:21-23
You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. ~Daniel 5:23
It's tragic. And the most tragic part is people generally do this in ignorance. We don't even know we're doing it! Let's take some time to explore today if there are things in our lives that we are honoring more than THE living God of heaven.
