Genesis 29-31: A Righteous Man

Laban. That trickster of an uncle fellow. I would have been completely fed up with this uncle of mine if I was basically being manipulated and held hostage to work for him. Seven years, turned to fourteen years, turned to twenty years... but Jacob was a righteous man. He continued to fulfill his part of Ladan's bargains, even though he just wanted to return to his homeland.

I wasn't sure whether or not to be shocked by the amount of children Jacob had, and with how many women he had children with (different times -- different culture). But I have been struck by God's sovereignty throughout these chapters. We see God show up in Rachael's life -- giving her children. We see Him in Jacob's life -- providing and sustaining him in times of trials. We see God beginning to work in Jacob's heart as he is given Joseph. God is the best
promise keeper.

May we be a group of people that expects God to show up in our lives. May we know that He will sustain us in our trails.  May we live in such a way that our lives are only to testify of His goodness and His grace.

  1. It also struck me ironic that God chose to use Leah (the wife he didn't really want, but was tricked into getting) to have the sons that would be the priests of Israel (Levites from Levi) and most importantly, would have the son (Judah) in the line of Jesus! Oh how what we plan and think that what we are doing is fulfilling God's purpose, when all along, only He really knows his purposes in our lives. We just need to be obedient and let him figure out what all He is doing!
