Genesis 24-25: Do not go back

"Do not take my son back there." Gen. 24:6
Abraham repeats this same sentiment twice in his conversation with his servant. "You must not take my son back there" (Gen. 24:8). After all that Abraham has gone through in order to get a son, it seems like he would be much more concerned with his son finding a wife than worried about his son returning to his relatives. How fragile this new life must have been, how tempting to return to the comfort of home. Abraham sees how easy it would be, how much more comfortable and normal it would be, for his son to return to his relatives and live with them. Why stay in this new land when all of your family lives somewhere else? Why live a difficult life away from them, alone in a land that is not yours?

Abraham recognizes this and seeks to prevent it. Do not go back. This is the land God will give to us, the place God has promised. It will be harder in this place. You will not have the support of your relatives. But you have been chosen for something greater, something more than an ordinary life.

What would have happened if Isaac had returned to his relatives to find a wife? How easy it would have been to just stay there, to make a life there. But at what cost? If he had, this story would have ended here and we would never have heard it.

It is so easy to make decisions based on what I am feeling right now, on what is most convenient to me right now. It is hard to keep in mind the promises of God and His faithfulness to come through. How many amazing experiences and stories have I missed out on because of my desire to do what is easy and convenient and without risk? I don't know, but I don't want to miss out on any more.
