The opening salvo of Chapter 30 remind
me of Socrates. As the story goes the Oracle declared
that Socrates was the wisest of the Greeks. Socrates himself, was a
bit astonished at this bit of news because he was firmly convinced
that he knew nothing. Intending to prove the Oracle wrong Socrates
searched out all of the people in Athens who were considered wise and questioned them. During his question-asking sessions he
inevitably discovered that those who were supposed to know-it-all, didn't. His final conclusion was that the Oracle was
correct, because even though he knew nothing at least he knew that he
didn't know. Which gave him +1 over everyone else who thought they
did know. Follow that?
I get the same feel from the
proverb-giver in Chapter 30. He wants to make a point about human
ignorance: “I have no knowledge of the Holy One and I'll prove that
nobody else does either with this series of rhetorical questions...”
“Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son's name if you know?”
These questions remained rhetorical,
gotcha-type, unanswerable questions until the advent of Jesus, but
now we have their answer!
- Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? John 3:13 & Ephesians 4:9
- Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Matthew 8:26-27
- Who has established all the ends of the earth? John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2 & Hebrews 1:10
- What is His Son's name? Luke 1:31-32 & Luke 1:35
There's an old joke in which a Sunday
School teacher is asking some easy questions to her young students in
order to help them settle in and get comfortable in class. She asks
“Who can tell me what is small, gray, has a bushy tail and loves
nuts?” Little Johnny confidently raises his hand and says “Well
Ma'am, it sure sounds like a squirrel to me, but because we're in
Sunday School I know the answer must be Jesus!”
We laugh at Johnny's naivete, but if he
was asked the questions given in Proverbs 30, he'd be exactly right!
