Jonah 1 & 2: A fish story worth telling

One of my favorite movies is Big Fish because it tells the tale of a man who runs away from the stories of his father. Its a fantastical tale seems to be a fantasy most of the movie and then at the end you realize its actually very much a true story just a bit expounded upon. The movie closes with a beautiful reconciliation and leaves me in tears nearly every-time ( good stories tend to do that to me).

Whenever I finish Big Fish I often think of Jonah. You see Jonah was a man that was running from the story of his Father and it wasn't until something really crazy happened that he started to realize the truth in what he was called to do. See whats so amazing about the Jonah story is that the reconciliation part is probably for me one of the most beautiful few lines in the bible. Though the lines are often forgotten about in the hustle and bustle of trying to make Jonah into a children's story the words for me have often been some of the most goosebump inducing words in the Bible. I'll simply leave you with the words of Jonah's prayer to dwell upon. Also go see Big Fish and when you do try to think of Jonah.

“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and you heard my voice.
For you cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
passed over me.
Then I said, ‘I am driven away
from your sight;
yet I shall again look
upon your holy temple.’
The waters closed in over me to take my life;
the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped about my head
at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
whose bars closed upon me forever;
yet you brought up my life from the pit,
Lord my God.
When my life was fainting away,
I remembered the Lord,
and my prayer came to you,
into your holy temple.
Those who pay regard to vain idols
forsake their hope of steadfast love.
But I with the voice of thanksgiving
will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
Salvation belongs to the Lord!”
