1 Kings 13-14: The Kings of Israel and Judah

These two chapters highlight the history of Israel and Judah and the kings that reined.  All of the kings are evil in the eyes of God except for King Amaziah.  He did right in God’s eyes, sought after Him, and brought to justice the murderers of his father.

At the end of chapter 13, we also see the death of Elisha, his burial, and the miracle brought on by his bones… Crazy!

At first glance these chapters may seem like a bore, and in reality they are.  But that does not mean that we can’t glean anything from them.  There are a few things that we can pick up from these chapters.

The first thing that I think the author is trying to show us is that in spite of leadership and a nation that has completely forgotten God, God has not forgotten His people.  We find several times throughout these chapters how God provides a deliverer for Israel and saves His people from utter destruction.  No matter how badly you may have sinned or forgotten God, God has not forgotten you.  He sent His Son as a savior for you.  And because of this, He will always be with you.

The second thing to notice is how the author lists a ton of kings but does not really go into much detail.  Instead, the author refers the reader to other sources if they really want to find out more about these Kings.  Why this is significant is because, no matter how important you might think you are, in the eyes of God, all that really matters is His end purpose and glory.  There are days when I think I am pretty cool, and my pride grows a little.  But, I need to keep things in perspective and realize that all glory and fame is due to the Lord, not me.

The final thing that I noticed is how Elisha passed from this world.  An evil king came to Elisha and wept over him.  This to me shows how great of man Elisha really was, and even to someone who does not know God - that king came to honor a man that God honored.  Then, when Elisha dies, Moabites try to come into the land; which they obviously waited until they knew that Elisha was dead.  These Moabites obviously feared Elisha, for they knew that a great power was with him.  And with the performance of the miracle from his bones, showed what power there really was even from his dead body!  This seems to drive home the point that if we are faithful to God and remain with Him, great things can be done, whether it is affecting the life of a non-Christian for the better, or whether it is showing the greatness of our God even unto death.  God is the one true, powerful God who will always remain with us.
