You may be thinking what in the world do these Psalms have in common? Is there a common theme that can be gleaned from these? I would say yes. There are two that I want to highlight. The first one is God is faithful and the thought that goes with that is if God is on your side, you will prevail. The other theme I'd like to point out goes along with the first one in that it is our response to God's faithfulness in the midst of our unfaithfulness.
The verse that stuck out to me in Psalm 16 was 8. It says that God is always with me and right beside me. This shows God's faithfulness. Though I may wander and go astray, God never leaves me. There is great joy and contentment in this fact. This is a truly awe-inspiring thing and what God's' grace is all about.
Psalm 77 and 78 seem to be all about remembering what God has done. These psalms give specific ways in which God has shown Himself to be in control of Israel's history and faithful to His covenant. Again we see that even though the nation of Israel has turned their backs on God, He is always ready to keep His word and take them back. In Psalm 77, the writer is wondering if God has left him. But then he REMEMBERS all that God has already done. He can rest assured that even though he doesn't feel like God is there, God has already proven Himself to be a trustworthy and loving God. Then in Psalm 78, we see a retelling of Israel's history and how even though they have deserved destruction, God shows them grace time and time again. I believe that Psalm 78 serves as a reminder of all the wonderful things God has done and that He is worthy of praise and devotion.
Take some time this week to think about how God has been faithful to you in the midst of your unfaithfulness to Him. Then thank Him for all that He has done and continues to do in your life.
