So imitate God. Follow Him like adored children, 2 and live in love as the Anointed One loved you—so much that He gave Himself as a fragrant sacrifice, pleasing God. (Eph. 5:1-2)
I think these two chapters can be summed up in these two verses. This is Paul's plea to believers. The rest of the chapters are more specific about how we can imitate God. I love that it says to follow Him like adored children. The fact that God adores us is just astounding to me. We have nothing to offer and everything we try to offer just wouldn't be enough. Not only are we adored by Him, we are His children. Children don't have to earn their title, they just are your children. You love them regardless of what they do or don't do. You'd do anything for them. I understand God's love for me more deeply since becoming a parent myself.
We are to imitate God, more specifically to love like Jesus loved---sacrificially. Jesus modeled how we are to live. He loved others unselfishly, he overcame evil with good, he prayed constantly, and spoke truth. He is the truth and the life. He's the only reason we can have faith and know how to love.
Whenever I get lost in the darkness of doubt or confusion, I need only to look at the Light. To follow His example- He lights the way out of darkness. To know what it means to love and be loved-He loved us so completely that He gave His own life.
